Description:
In a small remote village in the mountains of Kazakhstan, nine-year-old Yerken is left to live on his own and to survive by his wits. He carries out his daily tasks with a sort of stoic self-discipline, waiting for his brother to return home from the city where he has been studying. When the day finally arrives and his older brother returns home, Yerken is full of joy. But he fails to see that his brother is self-centered and will offer Yerken none of the love he has been anticipating. Yerken never leaves an impression of a helpless little boy, depending on everyone or everything around him. Yerken doesn’t fight the reality around him—he is too young for that. He is self-contained and protected by his inner world.
