Description: Lovely Man is the story of Cahaya, a 19-year-old girl with strong Islamic values, who discovers that her long lost father is a transvestite working on the streets of Jakarta. The story unfolds over one night as they walk the streets of Jakarta and explain how the encounter changes their lives, as they learn about love, loss and redemption.
Having grown up in the country, innocent, devout nineteen-year-old Cahaya heads to Jakarta in search of the father she has not seen since she was an infant. All she has is an address scrawled on a scrap of paper. But when she finds her father, Cahaya is shocked to find out that he is no longer the warm, tender man she remembers. He has become a “Ipuy,” a red miniskirt-wearing streetwalker in the transgender red-light district of Jakarta, selling himself to other men.Angrily dismissing the girl at first, he slowly opens up to her gentle insistence and reveals the harsh realities of his life and the reasons he left his wife and child.
Over the course of several walks on the streets of Jakarta they teach each other about lost love and redemption and the fundamental importance of the father–daughter relationship. Forceful performances from Donny Damara and Raihaanun distinguish writer/director Teddy Soeriaatmadja’s impressive liberal melodrama.
