Description:
In autumn 2009, it was 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall. In the minds of the older generation, the Wall may still be present – stubbornly held onto or faintly recalled. Yet for the younger generations and the millions of visitors searching the capital of the unified Deutschland each year, the Berlin Wall is simply an object that has vanished without trace. So: Where is the Wall?

A film about a void. The question “Where is the Wall?“ already points towards that void as the Wall itself is hard to find these days. On 12. November 1989, only days after the first gaps had victoriously appeared in the iron curtain, the official deconstruction of the prefabricated support-elements UL12.11 began. One year later, that operation was more or less concluded. The Wall, die Mauer, intended to last for at least another 100 years, became mobile. Ever since, only fragments remain of the anti-capitalistic shield that once cordoned the capital.

And those that are still standing aren’t quite what they used to be, as the end of the Cold War has rendered their intent and purpose obsolete. “Where is the Wall?”, therefore, is a film about an object that isn’t there any more, but that is still very present in the everyday of the city of Berlin.
