Shari Cookson made her first documentary Gunshot at the University of Southern California where she received a B.A. in journalism. Since then her credits include many award-winning nonfiction films.
All Aboard! Rosie’s Family Cruise is her fourth film for HBO after Living Dolls – The Making of a Child Beauty Queen, Skinheads USA and Asylum. She has received three primetime Emmy nominations and a Director’s Guild nomination for her work. Her films have been featured at festivals, including Sundance and Hot Docs. She’s been a judge at the Shanghai International Film Festival in China. Recently, she completed her second term on the Board of Governors at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. During her tenure there, she worked to gain recognition for nonfiction directors and writers by spearheading the creation of Emmy awards in these categories as well as for Exceptional Merit in Nonfiction Filmmaking.
She is an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California’s School of Journalism. In 2000 she co-founded Sceneworks, a production company she runs with her husband, Charlton McMillan, an editor/ producer with whom she has collaborated on numerous films. They live in Los Angeles with their two children.
