Don & Susan Sandets + Kurt Kuenne
Producers Don and Susan Sanders have had a love affair with the drive-in movie theatre since their childhood days in Texas during the 1950's and '60s. Some thirty years later, the Sanders realized that the drive-in was a vanishing cultural icon and decided to document its history in two lively coffee table books, The American Drive-In Movie Theatre (Motorbooks, 1997) and Drive-In Movie Memories (Carriage House, 2000).
As a result of their research, the Sanders have assembled one of the world's largest collections of photographs, footage, and ephemera related to the drive-in movie theatre. In 2000 they decided that it was time to use these items to make the definitive documentary on the drive-in and hired Kurt Kuenne to assist them.
Director Kurt Kuenne was featured as one of Filmmaker magazine's "25 New Faces of Indie Film" in 1999. He has made several award-winning short films and his first feature, "Scrapbook" (1999), since graduating from USC Film School in 1995 with a double major in Film Direction and Orchestration/Film Scoring.
"Drive-In Movie Memories" is his first foray into non-fiction filmmaking. In addition to directing and editing the film, Kuenne composed and orchestrated the film's score, which has been described as "a cross between Aaron Copland-style Americana and John Williams."
