Anthony Maras was born and raised in Adelaide, Australia. He grew up in a big fat Greek family - with a complete cast of larger than life characters – whose stories over Sunday lunch captivated him from an early age.
His grandfather in particular was a lover of the arts, cinema, and theatre – and often spoke of an exotic life abroad where he, in one instance, was a concentration camp in-mate with legendary Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis.
It was these early tales that first inspired Anthony’s imagination to roam, and where his initial interests in story telling derived. Anthony made a number of no-budget shorts throughout high school, and worked wherever he could as a production assistant on local features, music videos and short films.
Anthony completed a degree in law with honours at Flinders University and then went to study film as part of an Education Abroad scholarship at the University of California. Whilst at UC he won two President’s Undergraduate Fellowship Awards, received Dean’s Honor’s twice, worked as an on-line editor and tutor, and was fortunate enough to study under some of the United States’ leading film practitioners and theorists during his overseas stay.
Anthony’s return to Australia saw him develop a number of projects, one of which is the AFC funded short film Azadi.
