Martin Smith is an award winning filmmaker whose short TRACKS - a naturalistic portrayal of children's cruelty in a powerful, raw and affecting film - won the BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Short Film.
His latest short Seagulls, made with Creative Scotland's Scottish Shorts, Hopscotch Films, Screen Productions and Digicult had its World Premiere in competition at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Crystal Bear for Best Short Film
He is currently developing his debut feature SHOWS with Creative Scotland through their prestigious Accelerator Scheme, under the mentorship of Edge City Films' Paul Welsh. The project was developed from its inception through a Screenwriting Residency with Binger FilmLab, Playwright Studio Scotland and Creative Scotland with script editor Molly Stensgaard. The project has been selected for the BFI Film London Micro Market.
A second feature FIRES is in development with Creative Scotland.
His documentary JIMMY, a commission for the Scottish Documentary Institute, Creative Scotland and BBC Scotland, gives a unique insight into the life of disabled rights campaigner Jimmy McIntosh MBE. The film Won the Franklyn Marshall Award for Short Film at the CurtDoc International Documentary Festival, Spain, Won Second Prize at the ICCL Human Rights Film Awards in Dublin and was nominated for the BAFTA New Talent Award from BAFTA Scotland. It was nominated Best International Short Film in the Bill Douglas Award and nominated for Best Scottish Film in the Scottish Short Film Awards at the Glasgow Short Film Festival.
He recently competed LIAR a short with Blue Iris Films, The Bureau and Rankin Film Productions made for Collabor8te. The film has already won the BAFTA New Talent Award for Best Writing as well as being Nominated Best International Short at IndieCork, and was nominated Best Short Film in the Grand Prix at the Bilbao International Short Film Festival.
His short film Accidents [TIFF 2007] won 'Best Short Film' at Appledore, was nominated Best Short Film at the Jim Poole Scottish Short Film Awards and was nominated for Best Short Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. TRACKS was winner of the BAFTA Scotland Award for 'Best Short Film'. This is in addition to being Highly Commended at the TCM Turner Classic Movies Competition, its 'Best UK Film' Nomination at the Raindance Film Festival and 'Best of UK Shorts' Nomination at The Leeds International Film Festival.
Martin was selected by the Toronto International Film Festival to participate in their Talent Lab where 25 of the most promising emerging filmmakers from around the world are invited to build networks with some of the most esteemed filmmakers and artists in the world. In 2011 Martin was selected by the Edinburgh International Film Festival to participate in the EIFF Talent Lab.
He directed MY CITY: EDINBURGH four documentary films for Channel 4 featuring Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson, the boxer Alex Arthur and the artist John Bellany. He has also directed numerous music videos for artists including Arab Strap, Alex Smoke, Thirteen:13, The Delgados and King Creosote.
