Claude Baechtold
Born in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1972, Claude Baechtold graduated in 1996 from ECAL, (Art School of Lausanne) as a graphic designer. Since his five months visit to Iran in 2001, he has been working mainly in the field of photography. In 2002 he traveled throughout Afghanistan, where he shot thousands of pictures that he later used to produce an eight minute animated documentary. The same year, he received the Swiss Federal Award for his photographic work on Iran. First movie in 2003: Sublime Afghanistan.

Filmmaker’s Comment:

After twenty years of war, there is nothing left but chaos. But within this chaos, the yellow cabs, the beards, the turbans, the prayers, the weapons, the rich, the poor, and the terrible roads remain constants. Here and there, little stories emerge from the images of opium, mountains of fake money, posters showing the Afghani dream (Swiss chalets and skyscrapers), and mine fields covered with red poppies. This is not intended to be a journalistic work, but rather an animated fresco “painted” by a photographer-filmmaker witnessing a devastated but sublime country.
