Joël Calmettes
After studying engineering and philosophy and experimenting with theater, Joël Calmettes embarked upon a career in filmmaking. He moved quickly from video art to reportage, in particular for humanitarian aid organizations. He shot his first documentary in the late 1980s and, since then, has dedicated himself to this genre alone. A lively interest in Africa led to a number of films, such as "The secret history of Biafra" (2001), winner of an award at the Pessac festival (France). He has also filmed several portraits of influential thinkers and political leaders, such as "Un abolitionniste" (2001) on Robert Badinter, the justice who agitated for the abolition of the death penalty in France.

His profile of writer Ahmadou Kourouma also attracted notice. In 2005, he completed "Sur les routes du coton," co-written with Erik Orsenna, on the world cotton trade. He directed "Livrez-nous Grynzpan," which was co-written with Robert Badinter. He directed several documentaries on artists, writers, famous journalists. He has finished recently a docu-drama about the Berlin Conference “Berlin 1885, la ruée sur l’Afrique” (“Berlin 1885, scrambe for Africa”).
