Jean-François Duval
Jean-François Duval, aka Placid, was born in 1961 and kick-started his artistic career by launching Le Journal de Placid et Muzo with his mate Muzo whom he met at art school in Caen in 1976. They brought out 8 editions of the photocopied fanzine. He exhibited his paintings in 1983, again with Muzo. He has put together a dozen exhibitions of his work since, either on his own or as a duo, and has taken part in over 60 group exhibitions, as well as large-scale retrospectives in Nancy in 1997 and Pau in 2008, billsticking, processions and much more.

His first cartoons were published in Charlie Hebdo in 1981 and then in Hari Kiri. During the eighties and nineties he drew for various movements such as mail art and graphzines, as well as doing illustrations for the mainstream press (Libération, L’Humanité Dimanche, Penthouse, etc.).

Sometimes he tells absurd mini-stories in the form of cartoons (e.g. in Lapin and Ferraille) or animation (the “Chez les gens” series, two 2-minute episodes, Art Force Industrie 1991). He has also taken part in a few magazine and book adventures, either as publisher (Le Dernier Terrain Vague, STRIPS magazine) or as graphic designer (Maintenant magazine, published by L’Esprit Frappeur, Les Arènes, revue XXI).
