Marek Lechki was born in 1975 in Brzeg Dolny, Poland. Since 1998 he has been a student of the Radio and Television Dept. at the Silesian University. My Town is the director’s first tv film.
Upper Silesia is a big industrial region in southern Poland, once a burgeoning center of vigorous industrial activity. Yet, recently, it has turned out to be the largest concentration of downsized workers and a cemetery of bankrupt foundries and mines. Many of the residents, devoid of chances for any job whatsoever, withdraw inside themselves into the state of an emotional paralysis.
They can stand for hours on end in the windows of their cramped apartments or sit outside a beer stand, idle, both young and old. What happens to a young person who grows up in that dump, fully aware of the misery of the place and in open rebellion against it?
While longing for a more fulfilling life for himself and his kin, what happens to his emotions and spiritual life? What does his struggle look like, despite his disability to effect any change whatsoever?
